Mariners Breakdown, 5-4 loss vs Atlanta Braves, 6/28/11

M’s fall to 39-41, cannot capitalize on early chances and 3 run Braves inning dooms them

Play of the Game: Brian McCann singled with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, scoring Eric Hinskie and Nate McClouth and breaking a 3-3 tie.

The Good: Some early offense was nice for a change…two home runs didn’t hurt…not too much good about this one though.

The Bad: M’s went 3 for 11 with RISP and failed to take advantage of bases loaded situations early, allowing the Braves to hang in during the first half of the game…Pineda’s three walks in the seventh all came around to score…Smoak still struggling…Chris Gimenez had the ugliest at-bat of the year, and Adam Kennedy looked at a 3-2 fastball that was middle-in, right in his sweet spot in the ninth with Ryan in scoring position to strike out looking.

3 Stars: Jack Cust has gotten shuffled out of the playing rotation this month, but he made a strong statement by going 2 for 4 tonight with an RBI double, a home run, and another sure double that Heyward made a great catch on.

2 Stars: Ichiro went 2 for 4 with a leadoff home run in the first.

1 Star: Brendan Ryan went 2 for 5 and tried to start a rally in the ninth with a single.

Opposing Team Player of the Game: Brian McCann went 4 for 5 (he’s gone 7 for 9 in the last two nights) and had two RBIs tonight.

Prediction for next game: Felix takes the mound but the offense has left me with zero confidence…Braves sweep with a 6-4 victory.
