Mariners Breakdown, 6-0 win vs San Diego Padres, 7/1/11

Mariners don the 1984 uniforms and ride Vargas’s arm to continue dominance of Padres this year, now 40-42

Play of the Game: In the third inning with the bases loaded and two men out, Carlos Peguero swung at the first pitch he saw and lined it through the box up the middle to score two and push the Mariners lead to 4-0.

The Good: Complete pitching performance by Jason Vargas…some nice glovework all around the diamond for the M’s…nice to see some nice at bats up and down the order for once.

The Bad: Not too much to complain about…the worst thing was some of the ’80s outfits people wore for turn-back-the-clock night.

3 Stars: Jason Vargas. Holy smokes. Third complete game shutout this year, 5 hits allowed, 7 strikeouts, no walks. The only runner that got in scoring position was on a meaningless steal with two outs in the ninth.

2 Stars: Adam Kennedy had a pair of RBIs and a pair of hits tonight.

1 Star: Jack Cust was 1 for 2 with a bases loaded walk (his seventh) and an RBI double.

Opposing Team Player of the Game: Chase Headley went 3 for 4 for the Padres.

Prediction for next game: Mariners have owned the Padres the last three years and will win 4-2.
